Question · Dictation for work and study
Are medical transcription jobs still available in India?
Yes, some medical transcription work is still done in India. We found no current official count of Indian jobs, so its size is unmeasured. The closest official data, for US jobs, projects a 4 percent decline from 2025 to 2035, so it is the closest signal we have for India.

Yes, some remain. India became the global hub for medical transcription around the turn of the millennium 1. We could not find a current official or industry count of how many transcription jobs are left in India, so no source can tell you how many openings exist today. The evidence we could check points down, and most of it is US data.
If you are deciding whether to train for this work, the answer depends on who employs you, what they transcribe and whether the job asks you to correct machine output. The sections below set out the evidence and the cases where the answer changes.
India's transcription work came from US dictation, so US figures are the closest guide
A 2026 analysis reprinted by NextBillion from Rest of World says that American hospitals sent voice files to India, which became the global hub for the work 1. Indian transcription work therefore came from US dictation, and US figures are the best official data we found.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of medical transcriptionists will fall 4 percent between 2025 and 2035 2. That figure covers US jobs only. It does not measure India. Because Indian work came from US dictation, it is the closest official signal we have.
Editing machine drafts is a usual duty of the job
The change is in the task, not only the headcount. The BLS lists reviewing and editing drafts prepared by speech recognition software among the usual duties of medical transcriptionists 3. A worker who once typed from audio can now start from a draft and correct it. That is a different skill from typing from audio.
Openings still arise every year. The BLS projects about 6,200 US openings a year on average 4. The same BLS outlook expects all of those openings to come from replacing workers who transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force 5. In other words, US openings come from people leaving the field, not from growth. For an Indian job seeker, the US pattern suggests the same turnover, but the US figures do not measure Indian vacancies.
The same logic applies to editors and quality reviewers. Our question on what a medical transcription editor does describes that work in detail, and the back-end speech recognition entry explains the workflow that creates it.
The offshore contract chain adds a compliance check
Medical transcription that reaches India can arrive through a US vendor or a US provider's contract. Under HIPAA, a business associate is a person who, other than as a member of the covered entity's workforce, creates, receives, maintains or transmits protected health information 6. A covered entity may let a business associate handle that information only if it obtains satisfactory assurance that the information will be safeguarded 7.
When a US vendor that is a business associate hires an Indian firm, that firm is its subcontractor. The rule for subcontractors is different: a covered entity is not required to obtain those assurances from the subcontractor, and the business associate must obtain them 8. So the question for an applicant is not whether the Indian firm has a contract with the hospital. It is whether the US vendor has a written agreement that covers the Indian firm's work. The business associate agreement entry explains the contract in more detail.
Ask any employer two questions before you accept work: whether the dictation will leave the country, and who the subcontractor is. A firm that cannot answer clearly is a reason to walk away, not a reason to sign.
It depends on the kind of job
The answer changes with the employer and the work. The table sets out the main cases. The last row is where our evidence is weakest.
| Situation | What the evidence suggests |
|---|---|
| General reports typed from US dictation, for an Indian vendor | Shrinking. Machine drafts reduce the typing, and the US outlook is a decline 2 |
| Editing and quality review of AI or speech recognition drafts | The skill the BLS lists as a usual duty 3. We have no data on how long it will last |
| Jobs with Indian hospitals or clinics | We found no verified data on this market, so we cannot say |
What to do if you want this work
- Choose editing over pure typing. The BLS lists editing drafts among the usual duties 3, so practice on drafts with errors and check them against the recording.
- Learn the terminology and report formats. The question on how to become a medical transcriptionist lists the routes.
- Ask about the contract before you start. Ask whether the work involves patient records, whether it crosses borders and who the subcontractors are. Our question on whether a transcription job is legitimate covers the warning signs.
- Get pay and volume in writing. We did not verify Indian wage ranges from an official source, so ask the employer for the rate and expected monthly volume before you commit. For the US benchmark, see how much medical transcriptionists make.
The wider picture is in our guide to medical transcription, which covers the US outlook and the job's history in more detail, and in our overview of dictation for work.
What we could not verify
We did not find a current count of medical transcription jobs in India, an Indian employer survey or an Indian wage figure from an official source. We also did not find a government statistic that separates offshore from onshore transcription work. Some sites claim that thousands of Indians work in the field, but they cite no source for the number. The older market reports we found date from the 2000s, so we did not use them. The Rest of World article was not available in full, so our history comes from its opening paragraphs as reprinted by NextBillion. Any of these gaps can be closed by a recent employer survey or a direct conversation with the employer.
