Question · Dictation for work and study
Can dictation help non-native English speakers write work emails?
Yes, it can, but how much it helps depends on how well the recognizer hears your accent. Research finds that results vary by system and by speaker, so test a week of your own email, set the dictation language to the English you write in, and keep dictation for messages where the time saved is larger than the time spent fixing errors.

Yes, dictation can help non-native English speakers write work email, but the gain depends on whether the recognizer understands your speech. Google says speech recognition is most often trained on typical speech, so people with heavy accents do not get the same benefit 1. The useful test is your own voice on your own email, not a demonstration.
The speed gain is real, but the headline figure comes from short messages
In a controlled study on an iPhone, English entered by speech reached 153 words per minute, against 52 on the built-in keyboard. That is about 2.9 times faster 2. The participants transcribed short messages in a laboratory, not work email. Treat the figure as a ceiling for a short, planned message, not a forecast for your inbox.
Accuracy varies by system and by speaker, so one score misleads
The most useful recent test we found compared five recognizers 3 on recordings of non-native English from several first-language backgrounds. On read sentences, the two best systems, Whisper and AssemblyAI, reached a mean match error rate of 0.054 and 0.056 4. The author describes that as approaching human-level accuracy.
Two cautions apply. The study reports match error rate, not the word error rate used elsewhere, so the numbers do not line up directly with other tests. And the result is for read sentences. Treat it as an upper bound for your own email, not a forecast, because the email you speak on the spot is a different task.
The same study also found that the systems differed significantly in how they handled disfluencies, such as filler words, repetitions and revisions 3. If you pause, restart or rephrase while you search for an English word, those are the features to test. A tool that keeps your filler words and false starts will leave you more editing.
Adjusting the recognizer to your voice has produced large error cuts in research
Research has also looked at changing the recognizer rather than the speaker. In a 2007 study of foreign-accented English, the best combination of pronunciation modelling and acoustic adaptation cut word error rate by 46 to 71 percent relative 5. That was an older research system, so the number shows what adaptation can do, not what a current app will do. A 2019 study of accented speech found that personalizing the model reduced word error rate by 35 percent relative 6.

Checking a dictated draft takes longer when English is your second language
Reading rates are lower for readers with English as a second language, according to a meta-analysis by Brysbaert 7. Dictation saves the typing, but you still have to read the result to check it. Our inference, which the study does not test directly, is that you should budget more time for reading back a dictated draft than a first-language speaker would need.
What to do: a short plan for your own English
- Set the dictation language to the English you write in. On a Mac, go to Dictation in Keyboard settings, click the Edit button next to Languages, and select a language and region 8. Other systems use different menus, so how to change the dictation language covers the steps for each.
- Dictate a week of real replies. Use the three-part pattern from our guide to dictating email: purpose, details, then the ask. Keep the replies you would have sent anyway, so the test reflects real work.
- Count the errors you fix. Note each word the recognizer gets wrong and whether it was a name, a figure or a word that sounds like another. If the same word fails again and again, add it to the tool's custom words, or train on your voice where the tool allows it.
- Check names, numbers and sound-alike words before you send. A wrong figure costs more than a dropped article, so check the items a reader will act on. The word error rate measures overall accuracy, but it does not tell you which errors matter.
- Keep dictation where it wins. If fixing a draft takes longer than typing the reply, type it. The guide to dictating email explains where dictation saves the most time.
When dictation is not the right tool
Dictation is weakest for the parts of an email that need exact wording: a contract clause, a legal notice or a sensitive message, where you need to see every word anyway. For those, typing the final version is often faster than correcting a dictated one.
Some tools rewrite dictated text with AI. That can fix grammar, but it can also change your meaning, so compare the result with the plan you spoke. See AI dictation cleanup.
If you switch between two languages in one message, read multilingual dictation before you rely on it. And if the accent of your speech is the main problem, speech recognition and accents covers the fixes in more detail.
Bottom line
Dictation is worth testing for work email if you write in English as a second language, and the test is quick: one week, your own messages, and a count of the errors you fix. Research shows that accuracy varies by system and by speaker, so a published figure is a starting point, not a result for your voice.
