Question · Dictation for work and study
What does a medical transcription editor do?
A medical transcription editor reviews a transcript or machine draft against the original dictation, corrects errors in terminology, accuracy, completeness and format, and returns it for approval. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists reviewing and editing speech recognition drafts among the usual duties of medical transcriptionists.

A medical transcription editor checks a transcript or machine draft against the source, corrects what is wrong, and returns it for approval. The job goes by several names, including editor, quality assurance (QA) specialist and transcript editor. The core task is the same: making sure the written report matches what the clinician said and follows the format the facility requires. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lists this as a regular duty of medical transcriptionists: they review and edit drafts prepared by speech recognition software, checking that the transcription is accurate, complete and consistent in style 1.
Editing is the step that makes a draft reliable
In a 2018 study of clinical notes dictated in 2016, the error rate fell at each stage of review. The speech recognition draft had an error rate of 7.4 percent 2. After a medical transcriptionist edited the draft, the error rate fell to 0.4 percent, and to 0.3 percent in the notes that physicians signed 3. The editor does not produce the report from nothing. The editor catches the errors that the machine and the clinician missed, which is why the role exists after a draft is produced.
The BLS describes the same skill in its list of qualities for the job. Medical transcriptionists must assess medical reports and correct any inaccuracies and inconsistencies in finished drafts 4. That is the editor's core responsibility.
What an editor checks
An editor's review usually covers five things. The list is a practical summary of the duties above, not a formal standard.
| Check | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Terminology | Medical terms, drug names and abbreviations spelled and used correctly |
| Accuracy | Each statement matches the dictation, with no words added, dropped or swapped |
| Completeness | Every section the report type requires is present |
| Format | Headings, layout and sections follow the facility's template for that report |
| Consistency | Style, abbreviations and numbers match across the report and the facility's house style |
The first two checks need the most knowledge. The BLS says prospective transcriptionists must know basic medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and rules of grammar 5. An editor who lacks that knowledge can miss an error that changes the meaning of a sentence.
Our guide to medical transcription sets out common report formats, such as the history and physical and the discharge summary. Knowing those formats helps an editor spot a missing section.
Editing differs from typing from audio
Editing is a different job from transcribing a recording. A transcriptionist types from the audio. An editor reads a draft that already exists, often while listening to the original recording, and fixes it. The skill that matters most is attention to detail across a long document, because a draft can look fluent while still getting a dose, a side or a date wrong.
Two workflow terms help explain where editing happens. In back-end speech recognition, the clinician dictates, software drafts, and an editor corrects the draft afterwards. In front-end speech recognition, the clinician corrects the text as they speak, so less editing remains. Our entries on back-end speech recognition and front-end speech recognition define each one. The transcript editor entry lists the other names used for the role.
Remote editing is possible, but the terms set the work
The BLS says medical transcriptionists may work from home, receiving dictation and submitting drafts electronically 6. The word "may" matters. Whether a role is remote depends on the employer, and many employers set their own requirements.
Patient information is the main constraint. Under the HIPAA Security Rule, a covered entity may let a business associate create, receive, maintain or transmit electronic protected health information only if it obtains satisfactory assurances that the business associate will safeguard it 7. Before you accept remote editing work, ask whether the employer has those assurances in place and what security setup it expects from home.
It depends on the employer and the workflow
- Editing for a hospital or clinic usually follows that facility's templates and sign-off rules, and the editor may work inside the record system.
- Editing for a transcription company may cover several clients, each with its own formats and standards. Ask how that company handles client data.
- Checking AI scribe notes is a related task, and it is covered in our guide to AI medical scribes. The question on medical scribes and medical transcriptionists explains how the roles differ.
How to prepare for the work
- Learn the report formats. Practise on sample reports so that you know what a complete history and physical or discharge summary looks like. MTSamples lists 5,043 medical transcription samples across 40 specialties 8, but its reports are user-contributed and not guaranteed to be error-free 9. Use them to practise spotting errors, not as a reference for correct wording.
- Check the contract's data terms before accepting any remote role.
- Ask how quality is measured. Some employers track error rates or audit a sample of work. Ask what the target is and how feedback is given.
