Is medical transcription being replaced by AI?
Not yet, but the job is shrinking. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment to fall 4 percent from 2025 to 2035, and the work that remains includes reviewing and correcting machine drafts, which still needs a trained person to catch errors.

No, not in the sense of the job disappearing overnight. Medical transcription is shrinking, and the work is moving from typing audio to checking machine drafts. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that employment of medical transcriptionists will fall 4 percent between 2025 and 2035 1. That is a decline, not an end. The job still exists, and it is becoming a review job.
Speech recognition now drafts the first version, which reduces the need to type
The BLS ties the decline to a specific change. Advances in speech recognition and natural language processing let physicians document patient encounters in real time, which reduces the need for medical transcriptionists 2. When a machine writes the first version, fewer hours go to typing from audio.
The BLS also describes the work that replaces it. Medical transcriptionists review and edit drafts that speech recognition software prepares, checking that the transcription is accurate, complete and consistent in style 3. The useful question is therefore not whether a machine can draft a note. It is how many people are needed to check what the machine writes.
Machine drafts still contain errors, so review is still needed
The clearest evidence comes from a 2018 study of clinical notes dictated in 2016. The speech recognition draft contained at least one error in 96.3 percent of the notes 4. After a medical transcriptionist edited the drafts, the error rate fell sharply. Across the whole process, review and editing cut the error rate of the dictated notes about 25 times 5.
This study used 2016 recognition, so its error rates describe that generation of software. It shows the need for review rather than the size of the error rate now.
AI scribes change the drafting step too, with the same need for review
Ambient AI scribes listen to a visit and draft the note. In a UCLA randomized trial of two AI scribes, physicians said clinically significant inaccuracies in the notes occurred occasionally 6. A scribe therefore produces a draft that someone must still check. Our guide to AI medical scribes covers that workflow, and how accurate AI medical scribes are answers the accuracy question in more detail.
Demand is falling, but openings still arise every year
Employment is projected to fall, yet about 6,200 openings a year are projected on average 7. The BLS expects all of those openings to come from replacing workers who transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force 8. In plain terms, there is turnover but little growth. A newcomer enters a market where jobs come from people leaving, not from new positions. That is a weaker position than a growing field, and it is worth knowing before you train.
It depends on the workflow, the employer and the country
The answer changes with how a clinic or company works:
- Back-end workflows, where a clinician dictates and someone edits afterwards, still need an editor for every draft that matters. The back-end speech recognition entry explains this model.
- Front-end workflows, where the clinician corrects text as they speak, leave less for a transcriptionist to do. The front-end speech recognition entry describes them.
- Location matters. The BLS figures describe the US market. We did not find a current primary source that measures the same trend in other countries, so do not apply these numbers abroad without checking local data.
What to do if you are deciding whether to enter the field
- Read job listings for the duties. Listings that ask for editing and quality review of machine drafts describe the work that is left.
- Build the knowledge that review depends on, such as medical terminology, anatomy and grammar.
- Ask any employer how drafts are produced and checked, and whether the company has a written agreement covering patient data before it handles any.
- Compare the trend with the cost of training. Our question on how to become a medical transcriptionist lists the routes and what to check before you pay.
