Question · Dictation
Is voice typing free?
Yes, for the tools that come with your device. Dictation is built into Mac, iPhone, Windows 11 and Samsung phones, and the setup pages for those tools describe no purchase step. The exceptions are Microsoft 365 Dictate in Word, which needs a subscription, and paid third-party apps, some of which also have free plans with usage limits.

Yes, the built-in tools need no purchase. Dictation comes with Mac, iPhone, Windows 11 and Samsung phones, and the setup pages we read for those tools describe no purchase step. The exceptions are Microsoft 365 Dictate in Word, which needs a subscription, and paid third-party apps. Some of those apps also have free plans, but those plans set limits. The what is dictation guide lists the built-in tools.
The built-in tools need no purchase
Each major system includes its own voice input, and the setup steps show it being switched on rather than bought:
- Mac. On macOS 27, Apple's guide says to open Keyboard settings in System Settings, go to Dictation, and turn it on 1.
- iPhone. On iOS 27, you turn on Dictation in Settings under General, then Keyboard, and confirm the prompt 2.
- Windows 11. Press the Windows key and H to start voice typing in a text box 3.
- Samsung. Galaxy phones ship with two voice-to-text apps, Samsung voice input and Google Voice Typing 4.
These pages do not state a price, so the no-purchase claim rests on the absence of any purchase step. If a feature asks you to subscribe, it is no longer the free built-in tool.
Paid options: Microsoft 365 and third-party apps
Microsoft 365 Dictate is the main paid exception. Microsoft says the Dictate feature in the Word desktop app is only available to Microsoft 365 subscribers 5. If you already pay for Microsoft 365, the feature is part of it. If you do not, the built-in tool on your device is the cheaper route.
Third-party dictation apps range from free plans to paid licenses. The table shows two examples, with the prices listed on each vendor's pages when we checked on October 16, 2026. Prices change, so check the vendor before you buy.
| App | Free option | Paid option (as listed) |
|---|---|---|
| Wispr Flow | Free plan with 2,000 dictated words per week on desktop 6 | Paid plan, see the vendor's pricing page |
| Superwhisper | Unlimited dictation with local Whisper models 7 | $8.49 per month, billed monthly 8 |
Read the free limits before you start. A weekly word cap is fine for messages and short notes, and tight for a long report. Check the cap against how much you write in a typical week. Yap, which we make, is also a paid option, and its current plans are on the pricing page.
Free and open source: no fee, but more setup
Some dictation software is open source, so you can download it without a license fee. Free here means the license costs nothing. It does not mean support, polish or a setup that takes no time. Open source tools may ask you to choose and download a speech model, and they may not have a help desk.
It depends: when a free tool is not enough
- Volume. A weekly cap suits light use. Heavy daily dictation can hit the limit in the middle of the week.
- Where the tool works. Dictate is a feature of the Word desktop app, so it does not help in your email client or notes app.
- Privacy. Paying does not decide where your audio goes. Read the privacy terms of any tool you use for sensitive material, free or paid.
What to do: start free, then measure
- Start with the built-in tool on the device you already use. Turn it on, then dictate a real message or note.
- Use it for a week in the apps you write in. If it works everywhere you need, you do not need to pay.
- If it falls short, identify the gap. A missing app, a missing language or a weekly cap each points to a different tool.
- Try the free tier of a paid app first. Compare its limit with your typical week before you buy a license.
