Why is Google Translate voice not working?
Google's help points to four causes when Google Translate voice fails: the spoken language cannot be translated from speech, so the Speak or Dictation button is disabled; the microphone permission is off; the browser does not support microphone translation; or the spoken language is set wrong. Check the button first, then the permission, then the browser.

When Google Translate voice fails, the first thing to check is whether the button is enabled. Google's help says that when the Speak button is disabled, the spoken language cannot be translated 1. If the button is on, check permission, the browser and the spoken language, in that order. The steps below follow Google's help pages, read on 17 October 2026.
Check the Speak or Dictation button first
A disabled button is a language limit, not a bug. Pick another spoken language, or type the phrase and translate the text instead. On an iPhone or iPad, the same rule applies to the Dictation button: if it is unavailable, the spoken language cannot be translated 2.
Turn on microphone permission
Google's pages depend on the microphone. On an Android phone, the help says that if your device has a microphone, you can translate spoken words and phrases 3. On an iPhone or iPad, Google says the transcription feature needs microphone permissions for Google Translate turned on in the device settings 4.
On a computer, the same idea applies in the browser. Give the browser permission to use your microphone, and check the microphone settings in the browser and on your computer 5. If the permission is on and the microphone still fails, the browser is the next suspect.
Use a browser that supports microphone translation
Support depends on the browser. Google says you can translate with a microphone in Chrome, and that support in Safari and Edge is limited 6. If the microphone does nothing in Safari or Edge, switch to Chrome and try again.
Check that the spoken language is correct
A wrong spoken language is the next check. On a computer, Google says translation with a microphone does not detect your language on its own 7, so you have to select it. The Android steps also ask you to choose the language you speak at the bottom left before you tap Speak. If the language is wrong, the output can be wrong even though your voice was picked up correctly.
Check whether the problem is offline use
Google's offline help says you can download languages to translate without an internet connection 8. It does not say that speech works offline. Treat voice as something that may need a connection, and test it before a trip. If the button is enabled but nothing happens without a signal, that is the likely gap.
What to do when the transcript is wrong
Sometimes voice works and the result is still wrong. The app recognizes your words before it translates them, so a misheard word becomes a mistranslated word. If the transcript on screen does not match what you said, the fault is in recognition. Speak in short sentences, pause at the end, and say names and unusual words slowly. If the transcript is right and the translation reads oddly, the problem is in the translation step.
The accuracy question explains why each step can fail, and why errors in the first step carry into the second.
A checklist to work through
- Confirm that the Speak or Dictation button is enabled for the language you speak.
- Turn on microphone permission for Google Translate, or for the browser on a computer.
- Use Chrome on a computer, since Google's support for other browsers is limited.
- Set the spoken language yourself before you speak.
- Test voice with a connection, and do not assume it works offline.
- Speak one short test sentence and compare the transcript with what you said.
If the steps still fail, the cause is outside what Google's help pages describe, and the best next step is to contact Google through the Translate help center.
