Question · Dictation
Does voice typing add punctuation automatically?
Sometimes. Some built-in tools insert some marks from your speech without a spoken command, in supported languages, and many let you switch that off. The automatic commas and question marks are the ones to check, so for formal text, say the marks yourself and read the result.

Yes, in some tools, but not in every app and not reliably. Apple's Dictation on the Mac and iPhone, Windows voice typing, and Dictate in Word can each insert some punctuation from your speech, and each one covers a different set of marks. Google's developer speech service adds punctuation only when you ask it to. The automatic marks are the weakest part of dictation, so for text where every mark matters, say the marks yourself.
Some tools add marks on their own, in supported languages
The automatic feature depends on the tool, the language and a setting. Apple's Mac page says that for supported languages, Dictation "also adds certain punctuation automatically as you dictate" 1. The iPhone version is more specific: in supported languages, it inserts commas, periods and question marks as you speak, with no spoken command 2. Windows voice typing has an Automatic punctuation setting that inserts punctuation based on what you say 3.
Google's developer speech service works the other way round. By default it leaves punctuation out of its results, so you must request automatic punctuation to get any 4. That describes Google's speech API for developers, not the voice typing in Google Docs, which this section does not cover.
| Tool | Adds marks without a spoken command | Where to switch it off |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Dictation on Mac | Some marks, in supported languages | The Mac page we read describes no switch |
| Apple Dictation on iPhone | Commas, periods and question marks, in supported languages | Settings > General > Keyboard, then turn off Auto-Punctuation |
| Windows voice typing | Punctuation based on what you say | The Automatic punctuation setting |
| Dictate in Word | Auto Punctuation, where the language allows it | The Auto Punctuation toggle |
Automatic commas and question marks are the ones to check
The clearest numbers come from a 2023 review of English results on the IWSLT 2011 benchmark, which uses TED talks rather than dictation. On speech recognition output, the best reported comma score was 66.3% 5. Question marks are a weak spot too. On reference text they reached 87.8% 6, but on speech output they reached 63.4% 7.
These figures have limits. They come from TED talks, not dictation. They are F1 scores, which combine missed marks and wrong marks into one number, so they do not count how many marks you would fix by hand. Each one is the best of several earlier systems, not an average.
The 2019 paper on prosody-based punctuation argues that automatic punctuation should favor precision over recall. Its reason is that "precision is more crucial in this sense than recall" 8. A reader can add a missing mark in their head, but has to work to remove a wrong one. A wrong comma or question mark is therefore worth checking for in your own drafts.
Say the marks yourself when the text is formal
Spoken marks are the method you control. On iPhone, you say the name of the mark, such as "exclamation point", and the mark is typed where the cursor is.
Saying every mark takes more effort than letting the software add some, but it removes the guesswork. For a letter, a contract or an academic paper, say the commas and question marks you need, then read the result.
Test the overlap in your own app
None of the pages we read says what happens when you say a mark and automatic punctuation also inserts one. You may get a doubled mark, or a mark you did not expect. Test it:
- Open a new note and dictate one sentence with a spoken comma, a spoken period and a spoken question mark.
- Read the result, and note any mark that appeared without a spoken command.
- Turn automatic punctuation off in the app's settings, dictate the same sentence, and compare.
- Keep the setting that leaves you the fewest marks to fix for the writing you do.
For the full list of spoken names by platform, see the dictation punctuation guide. For the question mark specifically, read how to say a question mark when dictating.
What to do
- Find the setting in your tool: Auto-Punctuation on iPhone, Auto Punctuation in Word where it is available, and Automatic punctuation in Windows voice typing.
- For formal text, turn automatic punctuation off and say the marks you need, as described in the automatic punctuation and spoken punctuation entries.
- For a rough draft, leave it on and scan the commas and question marks before you send the text.
- Fix a stray mark with the keyboard. Correcting it by speaking again can fail, because the spoken correction can be misheard too.
For the wider habit of drafting by voice and editing afterward, read dictation mistakes. The dictation overview covers the rest of the subject.
Sources and limits
The Apple, Microsoft and Google pages were read on 2026-10-16. Platform settings change between releases, so check the setting in your own version of the app. The accuracy figures come from a benchmark of speeches, so treat them as a guide to which marks are weakest, not as a measure of your dictation.
