Question · Dictation
Can you dictate and type at the same time?
Yes, on some devices. On a Mac with Apple silicon, you can type during Dictation, and the cursor resumes pulsing when you stop typing. On iPhone, the keyboard stays open during Dictation so you can switch between voice and touch. Microsoft's voice typing page does not say whether you can type while it listens, so test that on your Windows PC before you rely on it.

Yes, on some devices. On a Mac with Apple silicon, you can type while Dictation is running, and it carries on when you stop typing. On iPhone, the keyboard stays open during Dictation, so you can switch between speaking and tapping. For Windows voice typing, the support page does not say whether you can type while it listens, so test it before you rely on it. The dictation vs typing guide covers when to use each method.
On a Mac with Apple silicon, typing does not stop Dictation
Apple's Mac Dictation guide describes this directly. On a Mac with Apple silicon, the cursor stops pulsing while you type, and it resumes after you stop, so you can keep dictating 1. That lets you fix a word with the keyboard, then go back to speaking without restarting the session.
Apple states this for Apple silicon Macs. The page does not describe Intel Macs or earlier macOS releases, so check the behavior on your own machine before you depend on it. To start Dictation, Apple lists three ways: the Microphone key on keyboards that have one, the Dictation keyboard shortcut, or Edit then Start Dictation 2.
On iPhone, the keyboard stays open during Dictation
Apple's iPhone support article says that you can use typing and Dictation together. The keyboard stays open during Dictation, so you can switch between touch and voice to enter text 3. In practice you can speak a sentence, tap in a correction, then return to speech.
Apple's iPhone User Guide says that Dictation on iPhone is processed on the device in many languages and that no internet connection is required 4. Language and region limits still apply, so check whether your language is supported.
On Windows, check the voice typing behavior yourself
On Windows 11, voice typing starts with Windows logo key + H on a hardware keyboard 5. It needs an internet connection, a working microphone and a cursor in a text box 6. Microsoft's page explains how to turn it on and off, and it lists keyboard shortcuts for the voice typing menu. It does not describe typing into the text box while it listens.
Because the page is silent on this point, do not assume the answer. Open a document, start voice typing, and type a few words to see what happens. Then check whether the dictated text and your typed text stay in the right order.
Mixing speech and keys works best in a set order
Whether or not your device lets you type during Dictation, the cleanest workflow is the same. Speak the draft in one pass, then type the fixes and the proofread. Typing during Dictation makes it easy to fix a word you have just said, but it is still better to draft first and correct after, so that you do not stop the flow of the sentence.
Two timing rules affect how you switch. On a Mac, Dictation stops automatically when it detects no speech for 30 seconds 7. If you stop speaking for that long, restart it with the shortcut before you continue. On iPhone, Dictation also stops after 30 seconds without speech 8, so the same rule applies.
What to do when your device does not allow it
If your device or settings do not allow typing and speech together, work in two passes. Dictate a short passage, stop, read it, and type the corrections, then repeat. Short passes also keep you clear of the 30-second silence rule, because you stop on purpose rather than when Dictation does.
