How long does carpal tunnel surgery take to recover from?
Kaiser Permanente advises avoiding repetitive hand work such as typing for up to two weeks after carpal tunnel release. Full recovery takes longer: in one systematic review, grip and pinch strength did not show marked recovery until 5 to 7 months after surgery.

Recovery from carpal tunnel release comes in stages. Light use of the hand returns first, repetitive work such as typing waits up to two weeks, and strength takes the longest. Grip and pinch strength did not show marked recovery until 5 to 7 months after surgery 1. Your surgeon sets the exact timing, and the timing depends on the type of surgery and on your work.
Repetitive hand work waits up to two weeks, and light use may come back sooner
Kaiser Permanente advises avoiding repeated hand movements, such as typing, for up to 2 weeks after carpal tunnel release 2. Tasks that do not repeat the same movement may be allowed sooner, and your surgeon will say which ones, along with the wound care and any hand exercises to follow. Our guide to dictation for RSI and carpal tunnel covers how to move drafting to speech during this period.
Your job and the type of surgery decide when you can return to work
The return-to-work date varies more than the healing date. Kaiser Permanente says that after open surgery on the dominant hand, a person whose work involves repeated actions such as typing may return to work in 6 to 8 weeks 3. People with less repetitive work may return sooner.
Endoscopic release is the second main option. In a Cochrane review of three trials with 294 participants, endoscopic release brought people back to work or daily activities earlier than open release, by a weighted mean difference of 6 days 4. That gap is small, so it should not decide the operation on its own.
| Factor | Usually a shorter recovery | Usually a longer recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Surgery type | Endoscopic release | Open release |
| Hand used at work | Non-dominant hand | Dominant hand |
| Work | Little repetitive movement | Repeated typing, lifting or gripping |
The table summarizes the pattern in these sources. It is not a schedule for any one person.
Typing speed can come back within weeks, but full strength takes months
Typing and strength recover on different timelines. In one study, the group's average typing speed after open carpal tunnel release rose above its pre-surgery level between weeks 2 and 3 5. That is a useful sign for people who type for a living, but it is one study, and averages hide individual differences.
Grip strength is slower. The systematic review of nerve recovery after release found that grip and pinch strength did not show marked recovery until 5 to 7 months 1. A wound that has closed does not mean the hand has finished recovering, so judge progress by strength and feeling, not by how the scar looks.
Severe symptoms before surgery can leave lasting numbness
Some people do not return to their earlier level of feeling. In severe carpal tunnel syndrome, skin sensation can be permanently reduced, and compression can cause muscle wasting at the base of the thumb 6. Recovery may depend partly on how much damage the nerve had before the operation, so ask your surgeon what to expect if your symptoms were severe or long-lasting.

What to do: ask your surgeon for a written timeline
Ask your surgeon three questions before the operation. Which technique will be used, and why. When you can use the hand for light tasks, for typing, and for lifting. And what symptoms should prompt a call before your next appointment. Keep a short daily record for the first months, noting grip, numbness and typing comfort, so that a slow recovery is measured against your own starting point rather than a general average.
If the wrist or hand does not improve, or numbness returns, see your clinician rather than waiting. The median nerve that the surgery releases is the same nerve whose recovery takes months, and a clinician can check whether it is healing as expected.
