Question · Voice and AI
Will voice replace keyboards?
No, not most of it. In a controlled study of short phrases on an iPhone, speech entered new text nearly three times faster than the keyboard, but editing, precise selection and quiet or shared spaces still favor the keyboard, so people will likely use both for years.

No. Voice will take over much of the first drafting, but the keyboard keeps the jobs that need exact control: revising text, selecting precise characters, and working where speaking aloud is not an option. The evidence points to a split between creating and revising, not a clean replacement. The full argument is in our guide to the future of typing.
Speech is much faster for creating new text
The speed gap is real. In a controlled study on an iPhone, English speech input reached 153 words per minute, against 52 on the built-in keyboard 1 2. That is about 2.9 times the keyboard speed, and the study counts the time spent correcting errors during entry.
The study used short phrases read aloud in a quiet room. It shows what speech can do under good conditions, not what a long working day looks like. It also did not measure the time spent editing a dictated draft afterwards 1.
The keyboard keeps editing, because editing is where voice slows down
Voice struggles when you change text you already have. In a longitudinal study of continuous dictation, navigation and error correction took a big share of the work in the early stages of use 3. Saying a sentence is fast. Finding one word in the middle of a paragraph and changing it is slow, and that is the task the keyboard handles well.
Voice assistants offer editing commands that can narrow this gap. For selecting exact characters, cells or code, a keyboard with arrow keys and shortcuts is still more exact. Our overview of how to dictate covers the editing commands that help.
Speech is also awkward in shared and public places
Talking is public, and that is a limit no recognizer solves. A 2018 workshop paper from University College London expected that people would feel more self-conscious speaking their input than typing it discreetly 4. A shared office or a client call is therefore a place where the keyboard is the better default.
AI makes the drafting step more spoken, not the review step
Typing is also changing its role with AI tools, where you describe what you want and then check the result. OpenAI's help article for ChatGPT says to use dictation to record a prompt, review and edit the transcription, and then send it as text 5. Speaking comes first and the keyboard returns for review. That review is reading and editing work, which favors the keyboard.
Typing skill still matters, because the fastest typists are far quicker than average
Typing speed for most people is still far from obsolete as a skill. The average typist in a large online test reached 51.56 words per minute 6, and the fastest typists reached 120 words per minute or more 7. For alternatives still in research, read the brain-computer interface speed question and the silent speech question.
It depends on the job, the place and the person
The answer changes with the situation:
| Situation | Better input | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Long first draft at a desk | Voice | Speech entered new text about 2.9 times faster in a controlled study 1 |
| Fixing a paragraph or formatting a table | Keyboard | Exact selection and shortcuts |
| Briefing an AI model | Voice, then keyboard | Speaking is quick, and reviewing is editing |
| Open office or public place | Keyboard | Speaking is overheard |
What to do now
Split the work. Dictate first drafts and long replies when you are alone, then switch to the keyboard for revising, formatting and anything with exact names or numbers. Keep your typing skills sharp, because a dictated draft you cannot correct quickly can cost more time than it saves. Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows, and it covers the drafting step. The built-in dictation on your device is often enough for short messages.
