When can you type after carpal tunnel surgery?
Your surgeon's instructions come first, but Kaiser Permanente advises avoiding repeated hand movements such as typing for up to 2 weeks after carpal tunnel release. In one study of open release, typing speed passed its pre-surgery level between weeks 2 and 3, while grip strength took 5 to 7 months to show marked recovery.

Your surgeon's instructions come first. As a general guide, avoid typing for up to 2 weeks after surgery. Kaiser Permanente advises avoiding repeated hand movements, including typing, for up to 2 weeks after carpal tunnel release 1. In one study of open release, average typing speed passed its pre-surgery level between weeks 2 and 3 2, but grip and pinch strength take longer.
Typing limits usually last about two weeks
The restriction is about repeated movements, not just keys. Kaiser's advice for the first 2 weeks also covers lifting things heavier than 1 to 2 pounds and using the hand, and the same passage names typing and computer mouse use as examples 1. Timings differ between surgeons and between open and endoscopic surgery, so treat two weeks as a starting point 1 and check it with your surgeon.
Typing speed passes its old level by weeks 2 to 3
The clearest timeline comes from a 2016 study of open carpal tunnel release, which followed 27 patients 3. Their average typing speed on a short online test was 49.7 words per minute before surgery 4. At 8 to 10 days after surgery it had fallen to 45.2 words per minute 5.
The average rose above the pre-surgery level between weeks 2 and 3 2, and reached 53.5 words per minute at 12 weeks 6. Averages hide individual differences. The study found that no clinical or demographic variable predicted how fast a person recovered 2, so your own timeline may be faster or slower.
Grip and pinch strength take longer than typing speed
Typing speed can come back before the hand is strong. A systematic review found that grip and pinch strength did not show marked recovery until 5 to 7 months after carpal tunnel release 7. The review's pooled grip results are low certainty, so treat the timing as a rough guide. In practice, you may type comfortably for several weeks while lifting, gripping a mouse or holding a bag still feels weak.
Open surgery on the dominant hand may mean a longer wait for repetitive work
If you had open surgery on your dominant hand and your work involves repeated actions such as typing, Kaiser Permanente says you may return to work in 6 to 8 weeks 8. That is a range, not a rule. Your employer and surgeon decide when you can return, and the 2016 typing study above covered open release only. We did not find a separate typing timeline for endoscopic release in the sources we checked, so ask your surgeon which applies to you.
It depends on the surgery, your work and how your recovery goes
- Open or endoscopic surgery: the timelines above come from open release. Ask which procedure you had and what the restriction is.
- Heavy repetitive work: if your job is mostly typing, plan for a longer return than someone who types a few hours a week.
- Slow recovery: if numbness, pain or swelling increase, or do not improve as your surgeon expected, contact your surgeon rather than waiting for the next appointment. Our guide to carpal tunnel treatment explains the options.
What to do after surgery
- Follow the written restrictions first. Ask your surgeon how long to avoid typing and mouse use, and whether dictation is allowed during that time.
- Use dictation for drafting if your surgeon agrees. Speaking the words takes the keystrokes for that text off your fingers, and the guide to dictation for RSI and carpal tunnel explains how to switch in stages. Dictation does not replace the restriction on hand movement, so check what is allowed first.
- Build back gradually. Start with short sessions and extend them as the hand allows, the same way you would after any surgery on the hand.
- Keep the follow-up appointments. Strength and comfort often take months, so report slow progress rather than assuming it is normal.
