Question · Typing and writing speed
What typing speed is required for SSC CGL?
The SSC CGL does not set a words-per-minute bar. Its typing part, the Data Entry Speed Test, is a qualifying test, and the 2017 instructions we could read give a norm of about 8,000 key depressions for Tax Assistant posts. We could not open the 2025 or 2026 notice, so check it before you prepare.

The SSC CGL does not set a words-per-minute bar. The typing part is the Data Entry Speed Test (DEST), which the 2017 SSC instructions describe as a qualifying test only 1. It counts key depressions, not words. For Tax Assistant posts, those instructions give a norm of approximately 8,000 key depressions 2. We could not open the 2025 or 2026 notice on the SSC website, so the figures here come from the 2017 instructions and need checking against the notice for your year.
The CGL typing test is a pass or fail gate, not a score
A qualifying test adds nothing to your marks, but you still have to clear it. The 2017 instructions say the data entry skill test is qualifying only 1. The target is therefore to pass with a margin, not to type as fast as you can. The notice sets the rules for a pass, so read that section before you plan your practice.
Coaching websites describe the test in more detail, including session timing and passage length. We did not use those descriptions. We could not check them against an SSC notice, and they do not always agree with each other.
The 8,000 key depressions norm is a keystroke count, not a word count
The 2017 line gives approximately 8,000 key depressions for Tax Assistant posts, and it does not state a time unit. Secondary guides read the norm as 8,000 per hour. If that reading is right, the norm works out to about 27 words per minute at five key depressions per word 3. The five-character word is the convention the How We Type test uses, which defines one word as five characters long 4.
So the words-per-minute figure is an estimate. Use it to compare your practice with the norm, not as a pass mark. The test itself is scored in key depressions, so practice in key depressions.
Time limits are set by the post, not the exam
The same 2017 instructions allow 15 minutes for the Data Entry Operator test 5. A Tax Assistant norm and a Data Entry Operator allowance are different rules, so the time limit depends on the post you apply for. Check the post in the notice for your year before you set a training target.
What to do before the test
- Find the notice for your year. Read the DEST section for the passage length, the time allowed, and the norm for your post. SSC publishes the notice on its own website.
- Practice on key depressions. Use a typing test that counts keystrokes, so your training matches the measure the test uses. Our keystrokes per hour entry explains the unit.
- Convert only to compare. Divide your key depressions per hour by 60 to get the rate per minute, then by 5 to get words per minute. Our guide to how typing speed is measured shows the same arithmetic for other tests.
- Count errors as well as speed. A fast result with many mistakes is not a pass. The typing accuracy entry explains how errors are counted.
It depends on the post, the year and the notice
The 8,000 figure is the 2017 norm for Tax Assistant posts. Other posts may use different rules, and the notice for your year can change them. If you are applying for a different government post, the typing speed for government jobs question sets out the other published bars. Our typing speed requirements for jobs guide lists the other published bars by role, and our overview of typing speed covers the rest of the subject.
