Question · Typing and writing speed
What typing speed do government jobs require?
Government jobs set their own typing bars, so there is no single figure. The US federal typist announcements we read all require 40 words per minute on a timed sample with few errors, and a 2024 Delhi Development Authority typing test treats a speed under 35 as not qualified.

Government jobs do not share one typing standard. Each agency or state sets its own, and the test rule can matter as much as the number. The US federal typist announcements we read require 40 words per minute on a five-minute sample with three or fewer errors 1. One of them makes that speed a selective factor 2, so a candidate below it receives no further consideration. Read the test rule in the announcement before you apply.
US federal typist posts set 40 words per minute, and no government-wide standard applies
The Office of Personnel Management says there is no qualification standard for the Clerk-Typist series 0322 3. The posting therefore sets the speed. That is why the bar can differ between agencies and between announcements, even when the number is the same. Compare the sample length and the error limit as well as the figure.
State tests score net speed, with a deduction for each error
The State of Iowa asks for net words per minute, with one point deducted for each error 4. A net score rewards accuracy in a way a gross count does not. We did not confirm a minimum speed for the Iowa typist class, so this page does not give one.
India's exams mix speed bars with keystroke counts
A 2024 Delhi Development Authority typing test for English reads: "Not qualified as speed is less than 35 WPM" 5. That is a words-per-minute bar with a hard cut-off.
The Staff Selection Commission measures typing in key depressions instead of words. Its 2017 instructions give a norm of approximately 8,000 key depressions for Tax Assistant posts 6. The SSC CGL question explains what that norm means and how to convert it.
Shorthand posts set the highest published bars
Goa's scheme of examination for the Junior Stenographer post sets the shorthand skill test at 100 words per minute 7. Shorthand is a different method from keyboard typing, so a fast keyboard typist should not assume a match. Our guide to stenography and shorthand covers the method.
Data entry in some government training is set in keystrokes per hour
A Western Australian training module sets the competency for a data entry operator at 10,000 keystrokes per hour 8. The module was approved in 1994, so read it as a training benchmark rather than a current hiring rule. The keystrokes per hour entry explains how that unit compares with words.
It depends on the country, the post and the test rule
The same number can mean different things. A 40 words per minute figure on a five-minute federal sample is a different test from a net score on a state test, and both differ from a keystroke count. Before you compare two posts, check four things: the sample length, the error rule, whether the score is gross or net, and the closing date.
We did not find an official UK civil service typing threshold in our search, so this page gives none. Check the advert and the assessment details for the post. For a related question about remote work, see typing speed for data entry and live chat jobs.
What to do with a published bar
- Read the test rule in the announcement: the sample length, the error limit, and whether the score is gross or net.
- Check the closing date. A federal posting that makes the speed a selective factor gives no further consideration to candidates who miss it by the closing date 2.
- Practice on the same measure. Count the words or keystrokes the employer counts, and deduct for errors if the score is net.
- Keep a dated result if the employer asks for one. The resume question explains what a checkable result looks like.
Our guide to typing speed requirements for jobs tabulates the published bars by role, and our overview of typing speed covers the wider subject. The average typing speed guide shows where 40 words per minute sits among typists in general.
