Question · Transcription
Is transcription a good side hustle?
Transcription can work as a side hustle if you already type fast and accurately and can fit it around other work. It is a weak choice if you need a high hourly rate, because it is paid by the audio minute and typing time can push your real hourly pay well below the posted rate.

Transcription is a reasonable side hustle for a fast, accurate typist who can work in short, flexible blocks. It is a poor one if you need a high hourly rate, because the work is paid by the length of the audio, not by the time it takes. Before you commit, measure your own hourly rate on a few real files.
The pay is set per recording. Rev lists its transcriptionist role at 1, and it says that earnings depend on the role, the complexity of the projects and how many minutes you complete 2. Those are the numbers a beginner should plan around, not the top of the range.
The guide to transcription jobs covers pay, skills and the tests in more detail. For the figures on earnings alone, see the question on how much transcriptionists make.
The posted rate is for audio time, not your working time
A transcription job is typing someone else's recording. You are paid for the audio you finish, and the time it takes depends on the speaker, the sound quality and the style rules. Rev pays by the audio minute, so none of your working time is counted in the rate. The transcription pay question shows the arithmetic.
Typing alone is slower than the audio. A one-hour recording at a speaking rate of 150 words per minute holds about 9,000 words, which takes about 175 minutes to type at the average typing speed of 51.56 words per minute 3. Even at the bottom of Rev's range, an audio hour pays about $8.23 for each hour of typing at average speed 4, and that figure leaves out listening, replaying hard words and checking.
Speed decides whether it pays
Typing speed is the main lever, and it varies widely. In a large online typing study, the average typist managed 51.56 words per minute, and the spread around that average was 20.2 words per minute 5. A typist well above average fills an audio minute in less time, and that is where a side hustle becomes worth the effort.
Checking takes longer than many beginners expect. In a 2024 study of research transcripts, transcribing and correcting automatic output took equally long, at about 7 times real time on average, for the data and conventions the authors tested 6. At that rate, one hour of audio takes about seven hours of work.
It depends on your situation
- It works well if you type quickly, you can work in short sessions, and you are happy to be paid for finished files only.
- It works poorly if you need a fixed income in a specific week. Pay follows the files you are given, and some weeks have little work. GoTranscript says its pay varies by language, audio length, difficulty, turnaround and quality, so no single rate applies to every file 7.
- It is a shrinking field in some areas. Medical transcription is projected to decline. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 4 percent decline in employment for medical transcriptionists from 2025 to 2035 8. General transcription is not covered by that projection.
What to do before you commit
- Log your hourly rate for a week. Record the minutes you spend on each audio minute, then divide your pay by the hours you logged. Compare that number with the posted rate.
- Choose a platform with published terms. Read the pay per audio minute, the payment schedule and the test before you apply.
- Refuse any offer that asks you to pay. The Federal Trade Commission says that if someone asks you to pay to get a job, that is a scam 9. The question on whether a transcription job is legit has the full checklist.
- Set a minimum. If your logged rate is below what you need for an hour of your time, stop, or move to a higher-paying niche such as legal work, where the legal transcription guide describes the pay and the training.

The short answer
Transcription is a sensible side hustle for a skilled typist who wants flexible, part-time work and is willing to measure the real hourly result. It is not a reliable way to earn a high hourly wage, particularly for a beginner. Test it on a few files, log the time, and decide with the numbers.
