Question · Dictation software

Is Talon Voice free?

Yes. The public version of Talon Voice is free to install and use, but it is closed source, and its paid Patreon tier (Talon+, the former beta) gets new features and extra speech engines first. You can use Talon for years without paying, but you will get fewer, larger updates.

Yes, Talon Voice is free. Its license agreement grants a royalty-free license to install and use the software 1. You pay nothing to run voice commands, dictation, mouth noises or eye tracking in the public version. Two caveats apply. Talon is not open source, and the newest features sit behind a paid tier on Patreon. This page covers both. The full picture is in our guide to Talon Voice, part of our overview of dictation software.

The public version costs nothing and works on its own

The free download includes the app, a speech engine and scripting. Talon's documentation says it comes with a free speech recognition engine and is also compatible with Dragon with no additional setup 2. The engine that ships with Talon, Conformer D, runs locally 3, so you do not pay per minute of audio, as you often do with cloud speech services.

The catch is the command set, not the price. Talon recognizes no commands until you add scripts 4. The community set is free too, on GitHub. Our page on how to set up Talon Voice shows the steps.

Free does not mean open source

Talon is closed source. The community wiki states this plainly, while users contribute command sets, speech data and documentation 5. In practice:

  • You can read, copy and change the community command files, because they are plain text.
  • You cannot read or modify the Talon application itself.
  • A 2026 article quoted by OSNews describes the developer, known as aegis, as the main and only developer 6. The project depends on one person.

If open source matters to you, see our guide to open-source dictation software for tools whose code is public.

Talon+ on Patreon is the paid tier

The paid tier is sold through Patreon. It used to be called the beta. Talon's changelog says it was renamed Talon+, that the beta has been more stable than public Talon because of more frequent updates, and that it keeps Linux/X11 support 7. The community wiki adds earlier access to new features, higher priority support and additional speech engine options 8.

Patreon shows prices in your local currency. Viewed from the Netherlands on October 27, 2026:

The real cost of free is waiting for updates

The gap between tiers is time. Public Talon went from version 0.4.0 in July 2023 to 1.0 in September 2026, about 38 months 12. Even at the 1.0 launch, the download links on talonvoice.com still pointed to version 0.4 13. Developer Josh Comeau, who coded with Talon while he could not use his arms, wrote that the most interesting features were in the paid private beta, reached by supporting the creator on Patreon 14.

It depends on what you need

You rely on it dailyConsider Talon+ for newer features and priority support.
You need LinuxTalon 1.0 is planned as the last public Linux/X11 release 15, so Linux needs Talon+.
You need a language other than EnglishThe main Conformer model supports only English, as of April 2024 16. Other languages need beta engines.
You want it for your companyThe license names a human person as licensee, not a company 17. Contact the developer first.

What to do

Download the free version and add the community command set. Spend a few weeks learning the alphabet and basic edits before you spend money. If Talon turns out to be more than you need, free built-in tools may do: our comparison Talon Voice vs Dragon covers a paid alternative, and the guide to free dictation software lists free options for plain dictation.
