Question · Voice and AI
Is AI dictation more accurate than built-in dictation?
Not reliably, and the evidence is thin. In a 2025 test of one audio episode, a Whisper model made far fewer errors than Apple's speech engine, but NVIDIA's Parakeet model made more errors than Apple, so the word AI does not settle accuracy. Test the tools on your own recordings before you choose.

Not reliably. The best direct test in the sources we reviewed favors a Whisper-based engine over Apple's speech engine, but it covers one audio episode, and it tested a developer interface rather than the Dictation key. The word "AI" on an app does not tell you how accurate its engine is. The engine, the audio you speak and any editing afterward all change the result.
One 2025 test favored Whisper, on one episode
The clearest comparison comes from a 2025 test by 9to5Mac. On one 7-minute-31-second episode, Apple's speech API had a word error rate of 10.3 percent 1. Whisper Large V3 Turbo had 1.5 percent on the same episode 2. Word error rate counts the words an engine gets wrong, so lower is better.
| Engine (same episode, 2025 test) | Word error rate |
|---|---|
| Whisper Large V3 Turbo | 1.5 percent 2 |
| Apple speech API | 10.3 percent 1 |
| NVIDIA Parakeet v2 | 12.3 percent 3 |
Read that table with two cautions. The test used one episode, so it is a data point, not a benchmark. It also did not measure the Dictation key in System Settings. The author reached Apple's speech API through an open-source command-line tool 4. The result describes that interface, and the Dictation key may behave differently.
NVIDIA's Parakeet made more errors than Apple
The same test ran NVIDIA's Parakeet v2 on the same episode. It had a word error rate of 12.3 percent 3, higher than Apple's 10.3 percent. So the AI label did not guarantee accuracy: Parakeet is a neural model, yet it made more errors than Apple's engine, while Whisper made fewer. The specific engine, and how well it handles your kind of speech, matter more than the label.
A 2025 pilot found no significant gap
A second data point comes from a 2025 neurosurgery pilot that compared a Whisper-based model with Dragon Medical One, a commercial medical dictation product. The difference in mean word error rate was not statistically significant 5. The two results were close rather than ranked. That pilot used clinical speech and specialist vocabulary, and it compared two dedicated tools, not the free built-in ones most people use.
Apple's new AI dictation has no measured error rate yet
According to 9to5Mac, Apple says that with the iOS 27 AI dictation, your voice is transcribed more precisely, and capitalization and punctuation are handled as you speak 6. The report gave no error rate for that claim. Treat it as a claim to test, not a result.
It depends on the engine, the audio and the editing step
Several cases change the answer.
- Language. Most of the evidence above is English. Engines differ in which languages they support well, and built-in and AI tools often cover different language lists. Check the language you actually speak.
- Audio. The tests used recorded or clinical speech. A noisy room, a strong accent or a fast speaker can reorder the results, so your own audio matters more than any published figure.
- Editing. A language-model pass can fix a missed word, and it can also change a word you got right. A 2025 INTERSPEECH paper argues that correction which relies mainly on text can over-correct, because it neglects how words sound 7. Cleaned text is not automatically more accurate text. Measure the raw transcript and the cleaned output separately, or the edit will hide the engine's errors.
- Windows. We found no independent head-to-head test of Windows Voice Typing against a Whisper-based app, so vendor claims should not settle the question.
What to do
- Record five to ten minutes of the speech you dictate, with the names and jargon you use, in the room where you usually work.
- Dictate the same passage into the built-in tool and into each AI app you are considering. Turn off cleanup where the app allows it. Superwhisper's Voice to Text mode is one example, and it is "transcription only, with no AI processing" 8.
- Count the words each tool gets wrong against a correct transcript. The glossary entry on word error rate explains the method.
- Then compare the cleaned output, since that is the text you will send.
If the built-in tool's error count is close to the AI app's on your own recordings, the built-in tool is enough, and you do not need to pay for the AI step. Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows, so add it to the same test like any other engine.
