How do you voice type in Hindi and get English text?
To get English text from spoken Hindi, you need two steps: recognize the Hindi, then translate it. Each step adds its own errors, and a 2026 study of Vietnamese speech found that translating recognizer output instead of clean text lost quality. Check the Hindi transcript first, then the English.

Voice typing writes the language you speak, so English text from spoken Hindi takes two steps: a recognizer writes the Hindi, then a translator turns it into English. The Hindi step can go wrong, and the translation step adds errors on top of that. Research on speech translation shows that the loss can be large. Dictate the Hindi, check it, and then translate.
Translation is a second step, so its errors add to the first
A 2026 study on Vietnamese speech found that on the Vietnamese-to-English subset of the FLEURS benchmark, translating recognizer output instead of clean transcripts cost between 6.79 and 10.64 BLEU points 1. Its authors also found that most recognition substitution errors were sound-alike confusions, and that these errors significantly degrade translation quality 2. Vietnamese is not Hindi, so treat that figure as an analogy: a recognizer that mishears one word can send the translator the wrong meaning.
For Hindi, the first step is also error-prone. On FLEURS, Whisper large-v2 had a 21.5 percent word error rate in Hindi 3, so roughly one word in five was wrong before any translation. Whisper large-v2 scored 22.0 BLEU when translating Hindi speech into English on the FLEURS read-speech test 4. BLEU and word error rate measure different things, so the two numbers are not directly comparable, but a BLEU of 22 leaves plenty of room for errors in the English.
Google's translate steps start with choosing two languages
In Google's Gboard help for Android, the translate steps are to pick the language to translate from, pick the language to translate into, and then enter your text 5. Use this route when you already have the Hindi as text, and paste it in after you have checked it. The speech step and the translation step remain separate.
A practical order of steps
- Dictate the Hindi in a Hindi voice typing tool, such as Windows voice typing 6.
- Read the Hindi transcript and fix any words that were misheard. Names and technical terms are the likeliest errors.
- Translate the corrected Hindi into English, and read the English against the Hindi.
- For anything important, have a fluent reader check the English before it goes out.
This order keeps the errors from the first step from reaching the translator. Copy the corrected Hindi into the translator as one block rather than sentence by sentence, so the translator sees the context around each sentence. Then check that the English covers every sentence of the Hindi. Names deserve the closest check, because the LAHAJA study found that recognition declined especially for names and specialized terms 7, and a misheard name is then translated as if it were a word. Checking the Hindi first shows you where a mistake started. For more on how translation tools differ, see the speech to text with translation guide, and the glossary entry on speech translation.
