Four famous writers are documented as dictating their books or much of their writing: Mark Twain, Henry James, John Milton and Winston Churchill. Each used dictation for a different reason, and the evidence for each is different. The examples below come from the sources we could check, and the page says where a source is secondhand. For the broader history, see our history of dictation.
Mark Twain dictated his autobiography to a stenographer
Twain had tried dictation as a way of composing as early as 1885 1. In January 1906 he began almost daily dictations to a stenographer 2. The editors say these dictations would form the bulk of what he called his autobiography 3.
Henry James dictated his late novels to a typist
Henry James made dictation a habit before the end of his career. His typist, Theodora Bosanquet, wrote in her memoir Henry James at Work that by 1907 dictation was a confirmed habit, and that its effects could be seen in his style 4. She also wrote that he found dictation an easier and more inspiring way to compose than writing by hand 5.
The memoir also describes his planning. His typist wrote that James worked out the scenes of a book before he began dictating it 6. She also recorded that he said he was too diffuse when dictating, and that he considered the gain in expression more than compensated for any loss of concision 7.
John Milton composed Paradise Lost by dictation after going blind
Milton lost his sight, and the Wikipedia article on Paradise Lost says that, having gone blind in 1652, he wrote the poem entirely through dictation with the help of amanuenses and friends 8. An amanuensis is a person who writes down words for someone else.
The story of the daughters who took the dictation is famous, and artists painted it often. The same article notes that the image of Milton dictating to his daughters became a popular subject for paintings, especially in the Romantic period 9. A popular image is not the same as a record, so treat the details of who wrote which lines as uncertain.
Winston Churchill's writings were dictated to secretaries
A review of Cita Stelzer's book Working with Winston says that from 1900 on, all of Churchill's writings and speeches were dictated to secretaries 10. The review says Stelzer's search began at the Churchill Archives Centre in Cambridge, which recorded oral histories while the people involved were alive. The review is a secondary account, so it is good for the pattern of his work rather than for the history of any one book.
Other names on lists are not verified here
Online lists name other writers as dictators, including Edgar Rice Burroughs, Agatha Christie and Barbara Cartland. We found those claims mostly in blog posts and marketing pages, and we did not check them against biographies or archives, so they are left out. If you find a biography or archive that confirms one of them, the four cases above would be a good model for the evidence to look for.
It depends on the kind of writing
Dictation can suit drafting. The typist who worked for James recorded the trade-off he saw: he thought he was too diffuse when dictating, but judged the gain in expression to be worth it. A dictated draft still needs careful editing before it is finished. For the effect on the finished style, see does dictation change how you write.
How to dictate a book yourself
- Outline the scenes or chapters before you speak, which is what James did before dictating a book.
- Dictate in sections of a manageable length, so each recording has a clear subject.
- Transcribe the sections, then revise the typed text, not the spoken version.
For the practical steps, read how to dictate. The act of composing aloud has its own term: oral composition. To see what the phrase "take dictation" means, read what it means to take dictation, and for the shorthand writers who did this work in offices, read what shorthand dictation is.
