Question · Dictation in your apps
Does Dragon NaturallySpeaking work on Linux?
No. Nuance lists only Windows as the operating system for its current Dragon products, and we found no Linux edition. On Linux, an open-source app such as Vocalinux is the practical route, since it runs its speech engine on your own computer.

No. Dragon NaturallySpeaking is a Windows product, and Nuance, the company that sells it, lists only Windows for its current editions. We found no Linux edition on any Nuance page we checked. If you need dictation on a Linux desktop, use an open-source app that runs its speech engine on your computer, such as Vocalinux. The rest of this answer explains why, what the workarounds are worth, and what to use instead.
Nuance lists Windows as the only operating system for current Dragon
Dragon Professional 16 supports Windows 11 (64-bit), Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit), and Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 1.
The other current product, Dragon Professional Anywhere, is described as cloud-hosted by a US reseller 2. Nuance lists Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server editions as its operating systems for the 2026.1 release 3. Every operating system on both lists is a Windows edition.
We searched for a Linux edition and found only older forum threads and unofficial guides. None came from Nuance, and none described a current version.
Nuance has stopped updating a non-Windows Dragon before
Nuance said it would stop providing updates for Dragon Professional Individual for Mac after 22 October 2018 4. The date comes from a secondary report that quotes the announcement, because we could not load the Nuance notice itself. A Mac edition was once sold, so the platform list has changed over time. The current list is Windows only.
Wine and virtual machines are workarounds, not support
Some people run Windows software under Wine, and older posts describe Dragon versions running that way. We did not test it, and we found no current report that it works with a supported Dragon version. Nuance's requirements do not mention Wine, so you would have no vendor help if it breaks.
A Windows virtual machine on your Linux computer is a different case. It runs the Windows operating system that Nuance requires, so it fits the stated requirement. You still need a Windows license for the virtual machine and a Dragon license for the software. Microphone access, audio delay and typing speed into other apps all need testing before you rely on it. We did not test this setup either.
Linux alternatives run the speech engine on your computer
- Vocalinux describes itself as a free, AGPL-3.0-licensed desktop app for X11 and Wayland 5. After you download a model, its local engines run speech to text on your machine, with whisper.cpp as the default 6.
- Handy describes itself as a free, open source app that works completely offline 7. It is listed for Windows, macOS and Linux 8, and its Ubuntu 26.04 guide was tested on GNOME with Wayland 9.
If voice commands are your main need, read the question on voice commands on Linux before you choose. For Windows-based options with voice commands, see the question on Dragon alternatives with voice commands.
It depends on what you already own and need
- You need Dragon's features on Linux: No supported route exists. Choose an alternative, or run Dragon on a Windows PC.
- You already have Dragon on a Windows PC: Dictate there, or use a Windows virtual machine as described above, and test it first.
- You only need dictation in a browser: The free online dictation page runs in your browser.
- You are buying Dragon: Check the current requirements before you pay. Does Dragon work with Windows 11 covers that question.
What to do on Linux
- Decide whether you need dictation or voice commands. Dictation is the simpler job.
- Check your display system. Run
echo "$XDG_SESSION_TYPE"in a terminal. The answer is usuallyx11orwayland. - Install Vocalinux or Handy. Our guide to speech to text on Linux lists the install routes and a typing setup that was tested on Ubuntu 26.04.
- Dictate a fixed paragraph, count the errors, and keep the tool only if it does what you need.
- If you still need Dragon, use a Windows PC, since that is the platform Nuance supports.
Yap, which we make, runs on Mac, Windows and phones, not on Linux. If you dictate on a Mac or Windows PC, the download page has the current versions.
