Question · Voice and AI
Can your phone summarize a voice recording on its own?
Some can. Samsung's Voice Recorder summarizes a transcript on select Galaxy phones, Google says its Pixel Recorder makes summaries on the phone, on select Pixel models, and Apple can summarize a recording in Voice Memos on a Mac that supports Apple Intelligence. Check your device's current help page, because the models, languages and features change.

Some phones can, but only on select models, in select languages and with the right software. Samsung's Voice Recorder and Google's Pixel Recorder both offer a summary of a recording. On a Mac, Apple's tools can summarize a recording too, but only on Macs that support Apple Intelligence. None of these summaries replaces the transcript, so read the summary against the transcript before you act on it.
Samsung's Voice Recorder adds a summary to a transcript
On a Galaxy phone, a summary depends on a transcript. Select the recording, tap the Transcript assist icon, and tap Transcribe 1. Once the transcript exists, open the Transcript assist icon again and tap Summarize to view a quick summary of the recording 2.
Samsung's support page describes these features as Galaxy AI features that are available on select phones and tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or higher 3. Transcript assist covers 16 languages on Samsung's US page, including several regional forms of English, Spanish and Portuguese 4. The UAE page lists 13 languages 5, and Samsung says availability may vary by model and region 6.
Pixel Recorder's summaries ran on the phone with Gemini Nano
Google's Pixel Recorder creates its summaries with Gemini Nano, a model that runs on the phone. In its August 2024 post about the feature, Google said the summaries keep data processing on the device 7. The same post says that Google used Gemini Nano with multimodality to further improve the summaries on Pixel 9 devices 8.
Google's post is from 2024. It does not give a current list of Pixel models, languages or recording lengths, so check the Recorder help page on your phone before you rely on the feature.
Apple's summaries on a Mac depend on Apple Intelligence
The Apple features in this guide are Mac features. Apple says you can summarize an audio recording in Voice Memos on a Mac using Writing Tools 9. That feature depends on Apple Intelligence, which Apple says is not available on all Mac models or in all languages or regions 10.
| Tool | Where the summary starts | Limits to check |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Voice Recorder | Transcribe, then the Transcript assist icon, then Summarize | Select Galaxy models on One UI 6.1 or higher; language list varies by region |
| Google Pixel Recorder | Summary in the Recorder app, with Gemini Nano on the phone | Select Pixel models; Gemini Nano with multimodality on Pixel 9 devices |
| Voice Memos on a Mac | Writing Tools, on the recording | Apple Intelligence support by Mac model, language and region |
It depends on your device, language and region
Whether your phone can summarize a recording depends on four things: the model, the software version, the language and the region. Check the transcript first, because every summary depends on it.
Where the summary runs is a separate question. Google says its Pixel Recorder summaries keep data processing on the device 7, but we could not confirm where Samsung or Apple process their summaries. If a recording is private, check the privacy notes for your app before you use a summary, and see our guide to whether voice-to-text is safe.
What to do if your phone does not summarize
- Check that your phone or Mac is on the list above for your model, software version and language.
- Make the transcript, and keep it with the recording.
- If the phone has no summary, copy the transcript into a chatbot and ask for the summary there. Can ChatGPT summarize a voice memo explains the limits of that route.
- Check the summary against the transcript, and look most carefully for points that are missing. Are AI summaries of voice recordings accurate explains why.
- Use the phone's suggested actions only after you have checked them. Suggestions are a starting point, not a saved task.
For the full workflow, read the guide to AI voice notes. The overview of voice and AI links to the other guides in this topic. The summary step is done by a large language model, and the transcript step by a transcript assist feature on Samsung phones or a speech recognizer elsewhere.
