Why is auto transcription not working in CapCut, Canva or Premiere Pro?
CapCut's own help article lists the causes: poor or missing audio, a wrong language setting, a weak connection and an outdated app. In Premiere Pro, check that Automatically Transcribe Clips is on and that your language is supported. We could not open Canva's or Adobe's help pages, so we give no product steps for Canva.

CapCut's help article lists five reasons why auto captions fail: poor audio, the language setting, a weak connection, a muted or missing audio track, and an outdated version. Start with the audio, then check the language, then the connection and the app version. The checks below use CapCut's own help article for CapCut, and Adobe's settings as reported by a working editor for Premiere Pro. For Canva we could not verify any product steps.
Check the audio before anything else
Every editor needs speech to transcribe. CapCut's help article lists missing or quiet audio as a cause: "If your video has no audio or the volume is too low, CapCut cannot generate captions" 1. Check the audio track and its volume on the timeline too. Play the first minute before you run the tool.
Noise is the second check. The same article says that "If the audio is unclear, distorted, or full of background noise, CapCut may fail to detect speech accurately" 2. Background music, a fan or wind on a microphone are all kinds of background noise. Try a cleaner recording, or turn the background track down, and test again. The article does not give a level for "too noisy", so judge by listening.
Set the language yourself
CapCut's article says that auto captions depend on the selected language, and that "Choosing the wrong language can result in no captions or incorrect transcription" 3. A video spoken in one language, with a different language set, can return no captions or an incorrect transcription. Set the language to the one the speaker uses, then run the tool again on a short clip.
Premiere Pro also depends on language. Adobe's Speech to Text page says the feature is powered for English, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Chinese and Hindi, "and more" 4. The list is partial, so check Adobe's current list for your version before you assume a language is supported. If your language is not on it, check the output closely.
Check the connection and the app version
CapCut's article says that "Since caption generation often uses cloud processing, a slow or unstable connection may interrupt the process" 5. If the caption step stalls or stops, test the connection before blaming the clip. The same article lists "Bugs in older versions" as a cause 6, so update the app and try again.
Premiere Pro: check the transcription setting
In Premiere Pro, the Automatically Transcribe Clips option is in the Transcription settings. A 2024 walkthrough on a Mac gives the path as Premiere Pro > Settings > Transcription, where you enable it 7. If no transcript appears, check that this option is on in your version. Our question on how to transcribe audio in Premiere Pro walks through the steps.
Premiere Pro's output may also need checking, and speaker labels in particular. Adobe's community forum has threads that report no text, or garbled text, in some versions. We did not verify those reports, and Adobe's help pages blocked our research tools, so check the release notes for your version. If the transcript still fails, the same walkthrough is a useful fallback: it made captions from a corrected transcript and exported them as a separate SRT file for YouTube 8. An SRT file holds the timed text of captions.
Canva: what we could not verify
We could not open Canva's transcription help article. The Canva feature page we could open did not list the file types, length limits, languages or plan rules for its audio transcription tool. We therefore give no Canva-specific cause. The general checks above still apply: confirm the clip has audible speech, the language is right, and the connection is steady. Then check Canva's own help article for the transcription tool and confirm that your plan includes it.
What to do, in order
- Play the first minute and confirm that the speech is audible and not too loud over music or noise.
- Set the language to the one the speaker uses, then test a short clip rather than the whole file.
- For CapCut, check the connection and update the app. For Premiere Pro, confirm that Automatically Transcribe Clips is on.
- If the tool still fails, transcribe the audio in a separate tool and bring the text back as captions. Our guide to video to text covers the options, and captions and subtitles covers the formats.
