Question · Dictation
How do you turn off voice typing?
To turn voice typing off, switch off Dictation in Keyboard settings on a Mac, Enable Dictation in Settings > General > Keyboard on an iPhone, and Dictation in Accessibility settings on a Chromebook. On Windows, say 'Stop listening' to end a session, and turn off Microphone access to block it entirely. Google Docs stops when you click the microphone again.

To turn voice typing off for good, use the same switch you used to turn it on. On a Mac, that is Dictation in Keyboard settings. On an iPhone, it is Enable Dictation under Settings, General, Keyboard. On a Chromebook, it is Dictation under Accessibility. To stop a single session without changing any setting, say the stop command or click the microphone again.
If you searched "voice typing band kaise kare" or "how to stop voice typing", the answer is the same: stop a session with the command below, or use the switch for the device to turn it off.
Stopping a session is different from turning the feature off
Most people only need to stop one session. Each platform has a quick stop:
- Windows: say "Stop listening", or press the microphone button in the voice typing menu 1. Stopping does not turn the feature off: Windows key + H starts it again.
- Mac: press Escape, the Microphone key or the Dictation shortcut 2. Dictation also stops by itself after 30 seconds without speech 3.
- iPhone: stay silent, and Dictation stops by itself after 30 seconds 4.
- Google Docs: click the microphone in the voice typing box again.
Use the switch below when you want the feature off across every app, not just the current session.
On a Mac, turn off Dictation in Keyboard settings
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Keyboard in the sidebar.
- Go to Dictation, then turn it off 5.
Turning Dictation off here is the switch for the whole Mac.
On an iPhone, turn off Enable Dictation
- Open Settings, tap General, then Keyboard.
- Turn off Enable Dictation. This is the same switch you turned on to start dictation 6.
On a Chromebook, turn off Dictation in Accessibility
Open Settings > Accessibility, go to Keyboard and text input, and turn off Dictation. This is the same screen where you turned it on 7.
On Windows, use Microphone access to block voice typing completely
We did not find a setting that turns Windows key + H off, so the way to block voice typing on Windows is to turn off microphone access, described below.
To stop every app from using the microphone, including voice typing, go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security, then App permissions > Microphone, and turn off Microphone access. Apps can use the microphone only when that switch is on 8. Turn it back on to use voice typing again.
On Android with Gboard, we have not confirmed an off switch
We have not confirmed a setting that removes the Microphone key from the keyboard. Gboard asks for microphone permission the first time, with the choices While using app, Only this time and Don't allow 9. Choosing Don't allow blocks voice typing until the permission is changed in the phone's app settings. If you need the key gone, check Gboard's own settings, or read Google's Gboard help page directly.
In Google Docs, the microphone is the switch
Voice typing in Google Docs runs while the microphone box is active, and it works in the browser. Click the microphone to stop it. The sources we checked describe no separate setting in Google Docs to turn the feature off. If Voice typing is missing from the Tools menu on a work or school account, the administrator may have turned it off 10.
What to check when it still seems on
- The microphone key is still on the keyboard. On a Mac, check that Dictation is off in Keyboard settings, then press the Microphone key once to confirm nothing starts.
- Dictation starts by accident. On a Mac, a double press of the fn or Globe key starts it when that option is set to Start Dictation 11. Change that option to stop the accidental start.
- A session will not end. Say "Stop listening" on Windows, or press Escape on a Mac. On a Mac, silence ends a session after 30 seconds 3, and on an iPhone it does too 4.
When you should turn it off
Turn voice typing off on a shared computer or a work device if you do not want it listening. For how the audio is handled, the Mac and Windows differ. Apple says Mac general text Dictation is processed on the device and not sent to Siri servers 12. Windows voice typing needs an internet connection 13, so it does not work offline.
