How much does legal transcription pay?
We found no official schedule for freelance legal transcription pay. The figures you can verify are court maximums per original page, such as $4.40 for an ordinary federal 30-day transcript, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics median of $72,420 a year for court reporters and simultaneous captioners.

We found no official schedule for freelance legal transcription pay. The figures that are verifiable come from two places: court maximums, which are set per page, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) wage data for court reporters. The federal maximum for an ordinary 30-day transcript is $4.40 per original page 1, and the BLS median for court reporters and simultaneous captioners was $72,420 a year in May 2025 2.
Court fees are maximums per page, and they differ by court
Courts publish a ceiling on what a reporter may charge per page. The Judicial Conference's maximum for an ordinary 30-day transcript is $4.40 per original page, effective October 1, 2024 1. A 2013 order from the District of Colorado set the same ordinary rate at $3.65 per original page 3, which shows that the figure changes over time and from court to court.
Some counties publish their own deposition rates. Maricopa County's contract sets a deposition transcript at $2.00 per page for the original and one copy, with regular delivery within 10 calendar days 4. Rush delivery within one working day is $3.50 per page 5.
| Schedule | Rate per page | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Federal ordinary 30-day, 2024 | $4.40 1 | Judicial Conference maximum |
| Colorado ordinary 30-day, 2013 | $3.65 3 | District of Colorado order |
| Maricopa deposition, regular | $2.00 4 | County contract |
| Maricopa deposition, rush | $3.50 5 | County contract |
Read the court maximums as ceilings. A reporter or agency may charge less, and these schedules do not show what a typical freelancer receives. In the Maricopa schedule, faster delivery costs more, so a transcript needed next week is priced above the same transcript on the standard timetable.
The BLS median covers reporters, not freelance transcriptionists
The BLS median for court reporters and simultaneous captioners was $72,420 in May 2025 2. The spread is wide. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $42,130 6, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $130,560 7.
That group includes simultaneous captioners, and it describes a different job from freelance transcription. Use the figure to understand the court reporting profession, not to estimate what a freelance legal transcriptionist will earn.
Freelance rates vary by how the work is counted
Agencies pay by the page, by the audio minute or by the line. The freelance rates we found online came from blogs and aggregator sites, and we could not verify them, so this page does not publish a range.
The unit matters as much as the number. A per-page rate depends on how the page is defined. The federal format requires each page to contain 25 lines of text 8, and other courts set their own rules. Our question on the format of a legal transcript explains that rule. For agency work, check the written definition of a page or a line in the contract, because it decides what the rate buys. Our glossary entry on the transcription line rate explains the term.
What to do before you accept a rate
- Ask how the rate is counted. Confirm whether it is per page, per audio minute or per line, and get the definition in writing.
- Check the delivery time. Rush delivery costs more, as the Maricopa schedule shows.
- Compare against a published maximum. The court schedules above show the ceiling for court work. A rate far below them is a question about the work, not proof of a bargain.
- Ask what the rate covers. Typing from audio and reviewing a machine draft are different jobs. Our question on whether legal transcription is still in demand explains how demand is shifting.
