Question · Typing and writing speed
What is the fastest anyone has ever talked?
The fastest speech on record is 655 words per minute, Sean Shannon's Guinness record for reciting a 260-word soliloquy from memory. For sustained speed over a whole song, the best example we found is rap: Eminem's Rap God averages about 257 words per minute across its full length.

The fastest speech on record is 655 words per minute. Sean Shannon recited the 260-word "To be or not to be" soliloquy from Hamlet, and Guinness lists his recitation as the fastest talker record 1. That is about 3.3 times the overall conversational rate of 196 words per minute 2. The record is a memorized text timed once, a short burst rather than a speed anyone keeps up for a talk.
Sustained speed is found in rap, not in recitation
For speed that lasts, the best example we found is rap. Guinness credits Eminem's "Rap God" with 1,560 words in 6 minutes 4 seconds, the most words in a hit single 3. Averaged over the whole track, that is about 257 words per minute 4. The average includes a spoken intro and slower passages, so the fast sections run higher than 257.
Hamilton is the other common example. A 2015 analysis of the cast album found that the fastest tracks are just shy of 200 words per minute, while the five slowest run from 64 to 80 5. Its fastest single verse, in the song "Guns and Ships", had 19 words in 3 seconds, which the table lists as 6.3 words per second 6. That burst converts to about 378 words per minute 7, but it lasts a few seconds, so it is not a rate for the whole song.
JFK's speeds depend on whether you count bursts or the whole speech
Kennedy is often cited as a speed talker. A 1961 magazine report, quoted in a 2010 post by Mark Liberman on the Language Log blog, said he had been timed in bursts of 327 words per minute, most often when he spoke off a prepared text 8. The same post notes that the claim refers to bursts, not to the overall pace of a speech.
For a whole speech, the post gives a calculation rather than a recording. The 47-minute address it discusses ran about 6,507 words, which works out to about 138 words per minute overall if the full 47 minutes is correct 9. Bursts and averages are different measures, and a headline figure from a burst should not be read as how fast he spoke.
Gilmore Girls and other shows have no measured figure we could verify
Television is often said to have fast dialogue, and the show Gilmore Girls is a common example. We did not find a measured words-per-minute figure for it from a source with a stated method. Estimates from subtitle counts circulate online, but we could not check how they were made, so we leave them out rather than quote them.
Why the records are not a model for a talk
The record-holders show what the voice and the mouth can do, but a talk has a different job. Three points follow from the figures above:
- Records are short. Shannon's recitation was one short text, and the Hamilton verse lasted 3 seconds 6.
- Burst rates are not averages. The 327 figure and the 138 figure measure different things 8 9.
- Records measure one performance. A memorized text or a rehearsed verse shows what a voice can do once. A talk needs a pace that holds for the whole slot. For a practical target, see the question on how many words per minute to speak in a presentation.
If you want to know your own rate, time a recording of yourself and count the words, as the speaking speed guide explains. The glossary entry on words per minute explains how the figure is counted, and the question on the fastest typing speed ever recorded gives the matching record for the keyboard.
