Question · Typing and writing speed
Does typing speed correlate with intelligence?
No study we found tests typing speed against IQ, so the correlation has not been measured directly. The nearest large study, of 10,613 adults, found that faster typists generally did better on cognitive tests, and that link weakened, but did not vanish, after the researchers adjusted for demographics.

No study we found gives typing speed and IQ scores for the same people, so the correlation has not been measured. The closest large study links faster typing to better results on cognitive tests, but that is an association across people, it weakens once demographics are considered, and it is not an IQ figure. Read it as a clue, not a verdict. Our typing research guide sets out the full evidence.
The IQ correlation has not been measured directly
We searched for a study that tests the same people on typing speed and on IQ, and found none. The closest work is a 2026 analysis of 10,613 adults in a national online panel. Faster typing was generally associated with better cognitive functioning across domains 1. Cognitive functioning is broader than IQ, so the study answers a neighboring question.
The cognitive tests included two measures of fluid intelligence
The panel took a set of cognitive tests. Two of them are labeled as fluid intelligence: Number Series and Verbal Analogies 2. Fluid intelligence is one of the abilities that IQ tests measure, so these tests are related to IQ. They are not IQ scores, though, and the study reports how typing relates to each test separately.
The link weakens once demographics are counted, but it does not vanish
After the researchers adjusted for demographics, the correlations were weaker, but they still generally pointed in the expected direction 3. So part of the raw link is shared with the demographic background of the participants, and a smaller link remains. Neither part is an IQ result.
Typing speed also reflects practice
A typing score mixes ability with practice, keyboard habits and the test itself. In the 2018 online study of typing, trained typists averaged about 5 words per minute faster than untrained typists 4. The authors also found that untrained typists can be as fast as trained ones 5. A correlation with a cognitive score cannot separate the parts of speed that come from practice from any other part.
Typing speed is consistent, which makes it a stable measure but not an IQ link
In the 2026 panel, a brief typing test gave an intraclass correlation of 0.79 for computer typing across two years 6. The score is consistent for a person over time. That makes the test a reliable measure of typing, but it does not show that the measure tracks intelligence.
| Claim | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|
| Typing speed correlates with IQ | Not measured. No study we found gives both for the same people. |
| Faster typists do better on cognitive tests | Generally yes, in a 2026 panel of 10,613 adults 1, with the link weaker after adjustment 3. |
| Typing speed measures intelligence | Not shown. Practice and habit also shape typing scores. |
What to do with this
- Measure typing for what it is. Speed is words per minute and accuracy is the share typed correctly. Our guide to how typing speed is measured explains the formulas, and the words per minute entry defines the unit.
- Treat any claim that typing predicts IQ as untested. We found no study that supports it.
- Use a cognitive assessment designed for the purpose if you need a measure of cognitive ability, and ask a qualified professional to interpret it.
- Work on speed through practice. How to type faster covers the practices that change speed. The related question on whether typing speed matters covers when speed is worth the effort.
