Question · Voice and AI
Can you control Home Assistant with Alexa or Google Assistant voice commands?
Yes. Home Assistant has an Amazon Alexa integration and a Google Assistant integration. The quickest setup is automatic, through Home Assistant Cloud, which is a paid subscription after a 30-day trial. The manual route needs your instance reachable from outside your network, and Google is moving its devices to Gemini, so check that your devices still work before you build on them.

Yes. Home Assistant has an Amazon Alexa integration and a Google Assistant integration, so you can speak to a device you already own and control your Home Assistant devices by voice. The easiest route is automatic setup through Home Assistant Cloud, a paid subscription. The alternative is manual setup, which needs a public address and a certificate, and for Alexa an Amazon developer account. Both routes send your voice command through the assistant company's own service first, so the voice path is not local, even though the control still runs in your home.
This answer follows Home Assistant's own integration pages, checked on 17 October 2026. Google's voice assistant is changing right now, and the status below reflects reports and Google's help pages as of that date.
Google Assistant controls your devices through Google
The Google Assistant integration "allows you to control your Home Assistant devices via Google Assistant on your mobile, tablet, or Google Home device" 1. You talk to Google, and Google passes the command to Home Assistant. That is the direction most people mean by voice control, and it differs from the Google Assistant SDK integration, which sends commands from Home Assistant to Google instead.
The setup choice matters. With Home Assistant Cloud, the project says you can connect in a few clicks, without dynamic DNS, SSL certificates or opening ports on your router. But Home Assistant Cloud "requires a paid subscription after a 30-day free trial" 2. Without it, the manual route needs more work. Your configuration "has to be externally accessible with a hostname and SSL certificate" 3, and the project says the manual setup needs a bit more work than most integrations, because Google requires Assistant apps to be set up in a particular way.
Alexa controls your devices through an Alexa skill
Alexa has the same two routes. With Home Assistant Cloud, you can "connect your Home Assistant instance in a few simple clicks to Amazon Alexa" 4. The Home Assistant documentation lists an Alexa Smart Home Skill as one way to "control lights and more" 5, and it lists other options too, including custom skills, Flash Briefing and the Emulated Hue integration.
Manual setup is more work. The project says it "has several requirements", and one of them is an Amazon developer account 6. Custom commands and Flash Briefing also need your instance reachable from the internet over HTTPS on port 443 6. Check the full list before you start.
Google is moving its devices to Gemini
Google Assistant is not a stable target. On 28 September 2026, 9to5Google reported that Google Assistant was gone on every device and account its checks covered in the US and Europe 7. Those checks covered a limited set of accounts, and they are not a Google statement. For the home voice assistant, Google's help page says that once a home switches to Gemini for Home, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant 8.
That changes how you should build the setup. A voice command that works today through Google Assistant may not work after your device moves to Gemini, and the Home Assistant documentation describes the Google Assistant route, not Gemini's own behavior. Test the command on your device before you rely on it, and check what Google says for your device. Our question on whether Gemini is replacing Google Assistant covers the wider change, and the question on switching back to Google Assistant explains what you can and cannot undo.
Which route to choose
Use this as a decision list:
- Choose Home Assistant Cloud if you want the least setup and you accept a paid subscription and a service outside your network for the voice path.
- Choose manual setup if you want to avoid the subscription, and you can keep a public hostname and SSL certificate running. For Alexa, also create the developer account.
- Choose local voice instead if you need your commands to stay on your own hardware. Alexa and Google commands do not, so the question on whether Home Assistant voice works offline covers the local route.
Compare the two sides in the Google Assistant voice commands guide before you decide. On the Alexa side, our question on what Alexa+ is explains Amazon's newer assistant. If you want to keep the voice path private, the question on whether Alexa stores voice recordings is a useful next step.
