Open the original (DOI 10.1371/journal.pone.0118494)- What it measures
- The authors compare their grant-writing hours with a national survey of faculty (reference 12 of the paper, the 2010 to 2011 HERI Faculty Survey by Hurtado et al., 2012). The figure is faculty's self-reported time on research and scholarly writing during teaching semesters; the authors did not measure it.
- What it does not show
- Self-reported, and only during teaching semesters. The quoted sentence gives the survey size but not its name, year or country; those come from the paper's reference list. Research and scholarly writing covers papers and grants, not email or messaging.
