Read the originalRead on October 16, 2026
- What it is
- Microsoft's overview of the Speech API, version 5.4, which sits between applications and speech recognition engines and provides shared and in-process recognizers.
- How much weight it carries
- Official but archived under previous-versions and written for an older generation of Windows. It is still the documented native speech interface, but Microsoft's newer docs do not replace it.
Facts taken from this source
- Microsoft describes SAPI as an application programming interface that reduces the code an application needs to use both speech recognition and text-to-speech.
“The SAPI application programming interface (API) dramatically reduces the code overhead required for an application to use speech recognition and text-to-speech” (Speech API Overview, opening paragraph)
- Microsoft's Speech API 5.4 documentation recommends a shared recognizer for most speech applications.
“A shared recognizer that could possibly be shared with other speech recognition applications is recommended for most speech applications.” (Recognizers section)
