Fact · Typing and writing speed

In a 2015 longitudinal study of 62 children on an online touch typing course, the developmental curves plateaued sooner for the inner loop, the finger movements behind single keystrokes, than for the outer loop, words typed, so the inner loop seemed to need less practice to develop.

What it measures
The authors modeled 1,091,707 keystroke latencies from 62 children, average age 12.6, who followed an online typing course with a first level of eight keys. The inner loop was measured by finger movement repetition and the outer loop by words typed.
What it does not show
Children on the first level of an early course, with plateaus read from fitted curves. It does not test adults or show how long a plateau lasts.
