What it measures
The estimate pools eight studies with 72,212 participants, after adjusting for confounding factors. An odds ratio of 1.96 means people with rheumatoid arthritis had about twice the odds of carpal tunnel syndrome compared with those without it, in these studies.
What it does not show
Odds ratio from observational studies, so it shows an association. The confidence interval runs from 1.57 to 2.44. The estimate is for rheumatoid arthritis in general, not for thumb or wrist arthritis specifically.
