What it measures
Fifty-nine adult speakers of seven languages read 20 texts aloud at normal speech rates, giving 585 recordings. The texts were translated to carry the same meaning in each language. The table reports each language's mean syllable rate with a 95 percent confidence interval.
What it does not show
Read speech in a laboratory, not spontaneous conversation. Syllables are a different unit from words, and a word has a different number of syllables in each language, so this figure does not give words per minute.
