In the source's own words
“A covered entity may use or disclose protected health information for its own treatment”

Open the original- What it measures
- The rule sits in the Privacy Rule's section on treatment, payment and health care operations. It is the reason a clinic can record and write up a visit without a separate patient authorization for each step of care.
- What it does not show
- The permission covers the covered entity's own treatment. It does not decide whether a vendor that receives the audio is a business associate, and state recording laws can still apply.
