A 2025 preprint on older Dutch adults talking to a geriatric chatbot found that generic multilingual speech recognition models outperformed models fine-tuned for older Dutch speakers.

In the source's own words
“generic multilingual models outperform fine-tuned models, which suggests recent ASR models can generalise well out of the box to real-world datasets”
Out of the Box, into the Clinic? Evaluating State-of-the-Art ASR for Clinical Applications for Older Adults, Bram van Dijk et al., arXiv (forthcoming in the HCINLP workshop proceedings at EMNLP), 2025, Abstract.
Open the original- What it measures
- The authors tested state-of-the-art speech models on recordings from older adults who used a chatbot for geriatric care. They also found some inputs that caused a high word error rate.
- What it does not show
- The study covers Dutch speakers in one clinical chatbot setting, not English dictation. The authors also report that some inputs produced high error rates, so the result does not promise accuracy for every older speaker.
