What it measures
Apple describes the sound port on Macs that have one. Apple's page on sound input settings lists the microphones a Mac can use: the internal microphone, a display's microphone, an iPhone microphone, or an external microphone plugged into the sound port.
What it does not show
The sentence describes what the port supports. It does not say that every headset works with Dictation, and it does not cover microphones connected over USB or Bluetooth.
