In the source's own words

“The recording is saved as an H.264 format QuickTime movie with an AAC audio track (if audio was selected)”

Record your screen in QuickTime Player on Mac, Apple, 2026, Record your screen steps, after Choose File > Save.

Open the original
What it measures
Apple's steps are File > New Screen Recording, then Stop in the menu bar, then File > Save. The page describes the saved file's format and does not give a file extension.
What it does not show
The page is versioned for macOS 10.14. The format is set by the recording, not by the transcription tool, so a tool that reads movie files may still need the audio extracted.
